Home Energy Use Service Project
|
The purpose of this community service project was to educate community residents about the importance of home energy management teach energy conservation. Over the summer, the Illinois Science and Energy Innovation Foundation and Chicago State University donated funds to the project. PREP/NSBE, Jr. students and their families formed teams to participate in the Renewable Energy Family (REF) Challenge. Team members included PREP/NSBE, Jr. students and at least one parents (sisters and brothers could also participate in the project). All team members were given home energy management kits to complete the project, a booklet entitled Managing Home Energy Use, and guidelines on how to save energy. Our goals were to: involve as many PREP/NSBE, Jr. participants as possible in the REF project, educate the families on ways to conserve energy, and create more energy-efficient homes for residents. The PREP/NSBE, Jr. students wanted to help families save money on their electric bills and to help create a safe and clean city for humanity and the environment!
During the fall, PREP/NSBE, Jr. participants continued the Home Energy Management Project and with the support of the University of Illinois at Chicago provided educational workshop and ComEd Home Energy Management Kits to 300 Chicago Southside Residents! Other community service projects included helping the less fortunate. The CSU PREP/NSBE, Jr. Chapter members organized a back to school project and donated school supplies and new clothing to a little girl that was seen walking down the street in shoes two sizes too big and baggy clothes. During Christmas 2019, the board asked the membership to donate gifts for that same little girl so that she could a have a joyous Christmas. The 2020 CSU PREP/NSBE, Jr. E-Board and the members donated wonderful gifts for the little girl and she said it was the best Christmas ever!
